MANILA, Philippines – Matty Healy, the frontman of English band The 1975, took to social media on Wednesday to lament the concept of paid meet-and-greets.

“Who came up with paid meet and greets?” the singer-songwriter wrote in a tweet.

“Did they think ‘Surely there must be something else we can monetise……..OH! Human connection!! They’ll eat that up!’” he added.

The 29-year-old singer also gave an advice to artists, saying “MEET YOUR FANS OR DON’T. DON’T ONLY MEET THEM IF YOU’RE GETTING PAID HONESTLY WHAT ARE YOU DOING.”

The 1975 has been hosting free meet-and-greets with its fans since last year, according to their manager, Jamie Osborne.

In July 2018, a fan asked Osborne if meeting The 1975 is “going to cost tons of money” to which the manager replied, “No it will have no charge associated with it x.”

Many netizens echoed Healy’s sentiments with one saying, “Actually proper sad how much kids save up for a forced “hello” and picture :( just straight up exploitation.”

Another netizen said meet-and-greets are just a quick photo opportunity with artists: “Thing is meet and greets aren’t even meet and greets its more of take a pic and LEAVE.” / gsg
