Netizens said Lastimosa lost because she wore a lackluster gown and a national costume which reportedly resembled a cake. The designs which gained flak on the Internet were made by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza.

Some also blasted Araneta’s comment on why she chooses foreign designers over local talents in providing gowns and national costumes for the country’s Miss Universe bets. The former beauty queen said in an interview that designs made by Filipino designers were “not good enough.”

Lastimosa was off to a good start as she broke into the top 15 and top 10 of the competition but failed to clinch a spot in the final five, ending the four-year streak of the Philippines in the beauty pageant. AJH
