#PatayTV, Stella Araneta trend as PH bet MJ Lastimosa bows out of Miss Universe
MANILA, Philippines—Filipinos turned to social media to express disappointment with the results of the 63rd edition of the Miss Universe after the country’s bet Mary Jean Lastimosa failed to secure a spot in the final five and win the beauty contest Monday morning.
The hashtag #PatayTV and Stella Araneta trended on Twitter worldwide after the final five was announced with no Miss Philippines in the list.
Filipinos who used #PatayTV hashtag were mostly disappointed but still proud of the country’s representative.
Twitter user Mako (@remarkabols) said, “Natawa akong nag-trend ang patay tv. Hahaha, that’s okay coz at the end of the day it’s the way you fight that really matters. #MissUniverse.”
Another user @angelpadla said, “Patay TV. But still [we’re] proud of MJ :)”

Another user (@ThatsARalph) said, “I feel bad that Stella Araneta‘s failure took its toll to MJ. I just hate this.”
Netizens said Lastimosa lost because she wore a lackluster gown and a national costume which reportedly resembled a cake. The designs which gained flak on the Internet were made by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza.
Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega hails from Colombia.
Some also blasted Araneta’s comment on why she chooses foreign designers over local talents in providing gowns and national costumes for the country’s Miss Universe bets. The former beauty queen said in an interview that designs made by Filipino designers were “not good enough.”
Lastimosa was off to a good start as she broke into the top 15 and top 10 of the competition but failed to clinch a spot in the final five, ending the four-year streak of the Philippines in the beauty pageant. AJH
