‘The Shape of Water’, ‘Handmaid’s Tale’, ‘Alias Grace’ win Directors Guild of Canada Awards
Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood was behind “Alias Grace” and “The Handmaid’s Tale”, two of 2018’s Directors Guild of Canada multi-award winners, with Guillermo del Toro’s dramatic fantasy romance “The Shape of Water” tied with “Alias Grace” on three accolades.
“The Shape of Water” won awards for Best Production Design, Editing, and Sound Editing in the Feature Film categories at a Directors Guild of Canada 2018 awards ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 20.
CBC and Netflix series “Alias Grace”, debuting in the wake of HBO’s Margaret Atwood success “The Handmaid’s Tale”, also collected a trio of DGC awards, likewise for Production Design and Editing, as well as for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for Mini-Series, received by Mary Harron of “American Psycho” fame.
On the topic of “The Handmaid’s Tale”, Kari Skogland (previously of “Vikings”, “Boardwalk Empire”) won the equivalent directing award for Dramatic Series, while the series as a whole also netted Picture Editing in the Television Series section.
Additional awards were delivered to feature film “The Grizzlies”, documentaries “Long Time Running”, “Silas” and “Fausto”, short film “Post No Bills”, TV comedy “Baroness Von Sketch Show”, family drama show “Heartland” and crime dramas “Fargo” (Season 3) and “Cardinal” (Season 2) as well as the second season of sci-fi series “The Expanse.” KM
