Sunshine Cruz hit back at those who made negative comments about her age, stressing that for her, getting older is a “privilege.”

The 44-year-old actress showed screenshots of negative comments from some netizens who called her “lola” (grandmother) and old, via her Facebook page yesterday, April 5.

One of the netizens told Cruz, “Lola ‘yung buto mo, ingat din baka mabalian ka.” (Grandmother, your bones. Be careful or you might break them.)

“Are you trying to insult me by calling me a lola? Proud of my age! I am 44, healthy and happy,” the actress replied. “[To be honest], I’d rather be a lola than be you. Kumain ka para magkaro’n ng nutrition ang katawan at pagiisip mo.” (To be honest, I’d rather be a grandmother than be you. Eat so that your body and mind get nutrition.)

Cruz then urged the public to educate themselves about aging, noting that growing old is a “blessing denied to many.”

“Huwag natin gawing ugali at gamitin ang salitang ‘matanda’ (Let’s not make it a habit to use the word “old”) to hurt, insult or describe a person negatively,” she said.

For Cruz, it is more important that a person does not hurt others as they get older.

“Ang mahalaga ay meron tayong pinagkatandaan. At higit sa lahat, wala po tayong tinatapakan at sinasaktan just because nadadagdagan ang ating edad,” she said. (What’s important is that people grow wiser with age. Most important of all, we do not hurt others just because we are getting older.)

Cruz has three daughters with former husband Cesar Montano: Angelina, Sam and Chesca. The sisters recently bonded with Montano and their brother Diego Loyzaga in a “fun family day,” following the father and son’s reconciliation after seven years of estrangement.  /ra
