‘Jewel in the Palace’ star Lee Young-ae donates ₩100 million, expresses support for Ukraine
Lee Young-ae, known for her role as Seo Jang-geum in the hit Korean drama “Jewel in the Palace,” has extended help to the people of Ukraine by giving a donation of ₩100 million (more than P4.2 million).
Ukraine ambassador Dmytro Ponomarenko revealed Lee’s donation by showing the ₩100 million check and the actress’ letter to Ukranian citizens via his Twitter page today, March 1.
“We are very excited and touched by the letter and the great financial contribution of the famous Korean actress Lee Young-ae in support of Ukraine and the demand to end the war as soon as possible! The donations will be transferred to the needs of victims of aggression,” Ponomarenko said.

In her letter, Lee called for the end of Russia’s war on Ukraine and expressed hope that there will be peace in Ukraine “as soon as possible,” as reported by Soompi, also today.
Article continues after this advertisement“As a family of veterans who went through war, I feel the horrors of the war more deeply than anyone else,” she was quoted as saying. Lee described Ukrainians as people “who love freedom and peace” and urged them not to lose hope and courage.
Article continues after this advertisementAside from “Jewel in the Palace” or “Dae Jang Geum,” Lee starred in various other South Korean films and TV series including “Lady Vengeance,” “Inspector Koo” and “Bring Me Home.”
Fellow celebrities who also showed support for the citizens of Ukraine are Stephen King, Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Ashton Kutcher, as well as Russian stars Ivan Urgant, Oxxxymiron and Maxim Galkin.
Meanwhile, celebrity couple Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have called for donations to Ukrainian refugees and pledged to double the amount of each by up to $1 million (P51.3 million). JB
