The highly anticipated “Blade Runner 2049” recently premiered in theaters and has been getting mostly positive reviews. However, box office numbers have a different tale to tell.

Based on a $45 million to $55 million opening prediction, “2049” has fallen short, raking in an estimate of only $31.5 million for its opening weekend in the United States and Canada.

While its box office performance appears impressive compared to the competition, its $150 million production budget somehow calls for a better outcome, according to Entertainment Weekly.

On the other hand, the original “Blade Runner” in 1982 was also not as wildly accepted during its time. It was only after several years since its debut that the movie gained a cult following. The movie has since cast its influence on pop culture.

Perhaps “2049” will have that same slow-burning effect that its predecessor had. With a freshness rating of 89 percent on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, it may be best to see the movie and arrive at a conclusion personally. Alfred Bayle/JB
