‘Signal Rock’ chosen as PH’s Oscar contender

“Signal Rock” is the country’s bet for the 91st Academy Awards.

The Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) selected the Chito S. Roño film for nomination under the Best Foreign Language Film category, reports Cinema Bravo.

“Signal Rock” features a family, one of whose members goes abroad and marries a foreigner to help her family in Biri, Samar. Her brother Intoy (Christian Bables) climbs rocks to find signal on his cell phone so he can communicate with his sister.

The film was an entry in the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino held in August. It won the Critics’ Choice and Special Jury awards.

It has been invited to international film festivals and will screen next month at the Busan International Film Festival in Korea.

The country has been submitting entries to the Oscars since the 1950s, reports Variety, but a Filipino film has yet to earn a nomination.  Niña V. Guno /ra
