Netflix ‘Death Note’ sequel goes into development

A sequel to the “Death Note” film adaptation by Netflix went into development, thanks to a certain level of success.

The 2017 horror-thriller that starred Lakeith Stanfield, Nat Wolff and Willem Dafoe as the demon Ryuk received mixed reviews from critics and fans of the Japanese source material of the same name. However, chief content officer Ted Sarandos said the film had “sizable” success, which appears to be enough to fund a sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Greg Russo, who has been scouted for reboots of the “Mortal Combat” and “Resident Evil” series, will write the script.

“Death Note” was loosely based on the Japanese manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata of the same name. The manga followed the story of high school student Light Yagami as he encounters the otherworldy notebook: the Death Note, which belonged to the death god Ryuk. The notebook has the power to kill anyone whose name gets written on its pages. The manga has been adapted into an anime series, two animated feature films and four Japanese live-action movie adaptations.

Meanwhile, plans to make a follow-up for the the urban fantasy crime film “Bright” has been put in motion. According to the report, David Ayer and Will Smith are currently involved in the planning stage. Critical response for “Bright” did not pan out so well; however, the film caught the attention of 11 million viewers on its first three days.  Alfred Bayle /ra
