Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin has contracted a “serious lung infection,” forcing him and his band to cancel their upcoming shows.
The band announced the postponement of its Brazil shows until 2023, via its Twitter account yesterday, Oct. 4.
“With deep regret, we’ve been forced to postpone our upcoming shows in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo until early 2023. Due to a serious lung infection, Chris has been put under strict doctor’s orders to rest for the next three weeks,” it explained.
Coldplay added that it is working “as fast as possible” to set a new date for the postponed shows, and will inform fans soon. The band is expecting that the shows will be rescheduled to early 2023.
“To everyone in Brazil who was looking forward to these concerts, we’re extremely sorry for any disappointment and inconvenience, and we’re so grateful for your understanding at this challenging time where we need to [prioritize] Chris’ health,” it stated.

Coldplay fans who will be attending the show may hold on to their existing tickets as they will be honored at the new shows. They may also request for ticket refunds, which will start at the point of sale.
“We’re optimistic that Chris will return to good health after the prescribed medical break and we look forward to resuming the tour soon. To everyone affected, please accept our sincere apologies, and thank you as always for your love and support,” Coldplay said to fans.
Coldplay, known for such hits as “A Sky Full of Stars,” “Yellow” and “Fix You,” released its ninth studio album “Music of the Spheres” in July 2021. They also collaborated with the K-pop boy group BTS in September last year for the song “My Universe.”
Martin announced late last year that the band would stop recording new music in 2025, though they plan to continue going on tours. /ra
