Eduardo Roy Jr., award-winning filmmaker, passes away at 41

Eduardo Roy Jr., the acclaimed director-producer behind the films “Pamilya Ordinaryo” and Fuccbois,” died at the age of 41 after suffering a massive pulmonary embolism.

The filmmaker’s passing was confirmed by his family through a statement on the Facebook page of Roy’s fellow producer, Ferdinand Lapuz, today, Feb. 23. Roy died on Feb. 21.

“It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Eduardo ‘Edong’ Roy Jr. on [Feb.] 21, 2022. He died of massive pulmonary embolism due to hospital acquired pneumonia,” his family stated. They also disclosed that Roy was diagnosed with stage four Burkitt’s Lymphoma late last year.

Roy received various awards for his films such as “Bahay Bata,” “Quick Change,” “Pamilya Ordinaryo,” “Lola Igna” and “Fuccbois.” He was named best director in both the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival 2016 and Hanoi International Film Festival 2016 for “Pamilya Ordinaryo,” which won best film at Cinemalaya.

He was also hailed best director in Cinemalaya 2019 for “Fuccbois,” while “Lola Igna” earned the awards for best picture, best actress, best screenplay and best musical score in the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino in 2019.

Roy’s wake will be held on Feb. 24 to 26 at the Arlington Memorial Chapels (Hall A in G) along Araneta Avenue in Quezon City.  /ra
