Lovi Poe set to channel her singer persona in upcoming starrer with Alex Pettyfer
Lovi Poe is gearing up to seize the spotlight on the international stage in October, when she starts filming her scenes opposite title-roler Alex Pettyfer (“Magic Mike,” “I Am Number Four”) and Poppy Delevingne (Cara’s sister) in director Ben Cookson’s “The Chelsea Cowboy,” the buzzed-about biopic of actor-gangster John Bindon.
“Aaaah … can’t wait to start filming ‘The Chelsea Cowboy’ in October,” Lovi told her 6.3 million followers on Instagram last Wednesday.
Set to play Dana Gillespie
The 32-year-old actress, who won best actress in Cinemalaya for Dan Villegas’ 2010 drama “Mayohan,” also revealed that she will be playing British blues singer and actress Dana Gillespie, now 72, who’s known for having originated the role of Mary Magdalene in the first London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s iconic stage musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” in 1972.
These days, Lovi is better known as an actress, particularly for her portrayals in indies like Jerrold Tarog’s “Sana Dati,” Brillante Ma Mendoza’s “Thy Womb” and Joel Lamangan’s “Sagrada Familia.” But we first noticed her as a singer in soothing singles like “I Love You” and “Kung Pwede Lang,” both from her 2006 debut album, “The Best of My Heart.”
While she isn’t really known for steely, roof-raising vocal pipes, her nothing-to-scoff-at musicality should be more than enough to help Lovi do well in “The Chelsea Cowboy.”
