Ryan Reynolds opened up to the public about his struggles with anxiety and offered his support to others just before the end of Mental Health Awareness Month.
Despite being known as one of the most cheerful and wittiest actors in Hollywood, Reynolds admitted that he has been battling mental health issues for a long time now via a Facebook post yesterday, May 26.
“One of the reasons I’m posting this so late is I overschedule myself and important things slip. And one of the reasons I overschedule myself is my lifelong pal, anxiety,” Reynolds said.
“I know I am not alone, and more importantly, to all those like me who overschedule, overthink, overwork, over-worry and over-everything, please know you are not alone,” he added.
Reynolds then stressed that mental health should be discussed more often to remove the stigma in openly addressing such a topic.
“We don’t talk enough about mental health and don’t do enough to destigmatize talking about it. But, as with this post, better late than never, I hope,” Reynolds stressed.
The Canadian actor disclosed that he first dealt with anxiety back in 2016, when he told GQ that he had a nervous breakdown while working on “Deadpool.” After his collapse then, he went to several doctors, all of whom told him, “You have anxiety.”
In a 2018 feature in New York Times, Reynolds also shared that he had “always had anxiety,” which he explained as “both in the lighthearted ‘I’m anxious about this’ kind of thing, and I’ve been to the depths of the darker end of the spectrum, which is not fun.” /ra
