It has been a year since Iza Calzado recovered from COVID-19, and she could not help but feel emotional as she reflected on her battle with the disease.
“It was exactly a year ago when I was discharged from the hospital after 11 days of fighting this deadly virus we are now very much familiar with — Covid 19,” Calzado said on her Instagram page yesterday, March 31. She also showed a photo of herself wearing a hospital gown and oxygen mask when she was in the hospital a year ago and another photo of her in a swimsuit as she stood in front of a small waterfall.
Calzado said that during her time at the hospital, she just wished she could get back to the safety of her own home.
“Perhaps it is why I can’t even complain about being home. I do know that I am privileged to even have a home and food on the table and I acknowledge that it is something not everyone has, but should,” she added.
She also noted that the pandemic has been hard for others, but offered encouraging words for everyone to “fight to survive.”
“You have been given an opportunity to live when so many have lost this chance. I hope you find something to be grateful for no matter how small it is,” she stated. “May you also find something to live for and fight for just like I did when I was in the hospital and now that I am home.”
She said that despite uncertainty and anxiety amid the pandemic, she considers every breath she takes as a blessing.
Calzado revealed last year that she was diagnosed with pneumonia prior to her COVID-19 test results. She also admitted that besides fighting the virus, she also battled against “dark thoughts” in the hospital. After surviving the disease, she has since reunited with the nurses who helped her beat COVID-19 and donated blood plasma to the Philippine General Hospital.
