Supermodel and entrepreneur Iman looked back on her marriage to David Bowie ahead of the British music legend’s fifth death anniversary.
Bowie passed away on Jan. 10, 2016, after an 18-month battle with liver cancer, a disease he had kept secret except from his family.
His memory, however, lives on in Iman and the people he most held dear. And for Iman, there is no marrying again.
“David is in our hearts and minds on a daily basis, for all of us,” she said in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK on Jan. 5. “You know, this was my true love. My daughter once asked me if I would ever marry again and I said, ‘never.’”
The pair have one daughter, Alexandria, who was born in 2000.
She also shared a bit about her marriage with Bowie, who was known to be notoriously private. Contrary to what some fans might think of what a life with the glam rock artist would entail, Iman said that their marriage was nothing short of regular.
“It was a really everyday marriage. He was a very funny, warm gentleman – you know, everyone talks about him being futuristic, but no, he was not, he liked more than anything to wear a three-piece suit,” she said.
“It was a beautiful, ordinary life and that was what was great about it. We could live in New York, pick up our daughter from school, walk everywhere… You know, I wish we had had more years,” she added.
She also said Bowie’s battle with liver cancer was “the saddest time,” but she finds comfort in the idea that he is still with her.
“He’s hiding in plain sight. His fans are still around, his music is still relevant,” she said.
She recalled a time she went to San Francisco in 2020, and while on a hike on the day of his death anniversary, a bluebird flew in front of her.
It can be remembered that Bowie’s “Lazarus,” the last single he released before he passed, references a bluebird: “You know, I’ll be free. Just like that bluebird. Now ain’t that just like me?” the song goes.
“I asked the tour guide, and he said, ‘Oh, they’re very rare here, bluebirds,’” said Iman. “And so now, instead of remembering it as sad, it is more of a joyous day.”
Bowie and Iman got married in a private ceremony in Switzerland on April 24, 1992, as per Harper’s Bazaar on June 6, 2017. They solemnized their marriage on June 6, 1992. Cody Cepeda /ra
