Maritoni Fernandez marks 20th year as breast cancer survivor: ‘I am deeply grateful’
Maritoni Fernandez reflected on her journey as a breast cancer survivor as she marked her 20th year of being cancer-free.
“Today I had my mammogram, sonogram and tomography done,” she said on her Instagram page last Tuesday, Oct. 6. She also posted a photo of her wearing a face mask while undergoing a routine checkup.
“I am a [20-year] survivor and you’d think I’m used to the drill by now but every [checkup] still brings with it a flood of emotions,” Fernandez pointed out.
“From being anxious heading to the hospital, [especially] now that it’s in the midst of a pandemic, to being grateful and relieved when given the two thumbs up by my dear friend and doctor Dra. Barbara Perez of St. Luke’s breast center,” she added.
Though she was not accompanied by her daughter Lexi Alvarez anymore since she is studying in Australia, her husband, Mon Dayrit, waited for her at the hospital.
“Thank you @mondayrit for being my rock,” Fernandez said.
“Thank you Jesus for the all clear. I am deeply grateful,” the actress expressed. “When it boils down to it, you realize nothing truly matters as much as your health.”
She then urged her followers to have themselves checked soon since October is also considered as breast cancer awareness month.
“I know it’s [COVID-19] and all but don’t delay your [checkups]. Set an appointment and go get it done,” Fernandez stated. “You can safely go as long as you prepare properly.”
The actress also stressed how “nothing matters more than your own peace of mind” and added that easy detection is the key to surviving breast cancer.
Fernandez was diagnosed with Stage 2A breast cancer when she was 30 years old. /ra
