Actress and COVID-19 survivor Iza Calzado gave the public some tips on how to stay protected despite not having face masks at home.
Through a simple tutorial, Calzado showed how to make an improvised mask using items people can find easily. Calzado wanted to address the lack of face masks amid the pandemic, as seen on her Instagram post yesterday, April 13.
The materials Calzado used for her mask were a handkerchief (or scarf) and two hair ties or rubber bands. The actress also pointed out that any cloth could be used as long as its length is sufficient.
To create the mask, Calzado folded the handkerchief crosswise. She then placed the two hair ties on both sides of the folded cloth, occupying just one-fourth of the handkerchief from both ends. Calzado said the cloth should form a candy shape after that.
Then, the actress folded both ends of the cloth inward, emphasizing that the two bands should stick out for it will serve as the face mask’s cords. Lastly, she tucked one end of the cloth to the other end to secure it.
While making the mask, Calzado explained that wearing face masks is important not only to protect one’s self but also the people around.
“Mas simple, mas maganda at mas abot kaya (The simpler, the better, and more affordable),” she also stressed.
To reach a wider audience, Calzado tagged some of her friends to also make their own version of the mask, including fashion designer Rajo Laurel.

After recovering from COVID-19, Calzado spoke about wanting better healthcare for every Filipino. Calzado also called for the removal of stigma on COVID-19 patients and to stop the discrimination against health workers who are in the frontlines of battling the virus.
Aside from Calzado, Bea Alonzo also gave a tutorial on how to create face shields for frontliners amid the health crisis. JB
