Echo’s EJK short to compete in Finland

Eileen Cabiling’s “Basurero,” which features Jericho Rosales in the lead, will be competing in the international category of the 2020 Tampere Film Festival in Finland, its producer Darlene Malimas told Inquirer Entertainment.

The 17-minute “Basurero” tells of the struggles of a fisherman named Bong (Rosales) when he realizes there’s hardly any fish in the sea anymore due to climate change and overfishing.

Desperate for cash, he agrees to dump victims of faceless vigilantes supporting the Philippine drug war into the sea. On that day, the killings hit uncomfortably close to home, with his neighbor’s son murdered for selling drugs.

The 50th edition of Tampere film fest will be held on March 4 to 8. A total of 4,023 film entries were submitted, according to its website Tamperefilmfestival.fi. “Basurero” will be one of 60 short films from 45 countries that will compete for the awards, which will be announced on March 8.
