MANILA, Philippines — Actors Judy Ann Santos and Alden Richards are among the artists who will be awarded by President Rodrigo Duterte with Ani ng Dangal, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) announced Wednesday.
Ani ng Dangal, or Harvest of Honors, is given to Filipino artists who had reaped international awards and accolades in the previous year.
The NCCA said the award will be given to one artist for Architecture and Allied Arts, 17 acts in Cinema, seven awards in Dance, three in Literary Arts, eight in Music and 16 in Visual Arts.
Leading the honorees is Santos who starred in Brillante Mendoza’s “Mindanao,” which made waves internationally and had screenings in Busan, South Korea, and Tokyo, Japan.
Santos’ portrayal of a Muslim mother caring for her cancer-stricken daughter earned her a Best Actress recognition at the 2019 Cairo International Film Festival in Egypt.
Santos also won Best Actress at the 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) for the same role, with “Mindanao” bagging 10 other awards.
Also among the Ani ng Dangal honorees is Richards who starred in what is now considered the highest-grossing film in the country “Hello, Love, Goodbye.”
Richards bagged the Asian Star Prize at the Seoul International Drama Awards, an annual ceremony honoring excellence in television drama worldwide.
Another notable awardee is Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2, which won the World Architecture Festival, beating Singapore’s Changi Airport.
Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist of the Philippines and a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communications, will also be honored under the Literary Arts category.
