“Game of Thrones” fans may have to wait a few years before they can watch more content on the hit fantasy series.
“House of the Dragon,” a spin-off of “Thrones,” is likely to hit screens in 2022, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Variety on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Author George R.R. Martin is co-creating it with Ryan Condal.
The prequel series chronicles the history of the House of Targaryen and takes place 300 years before the timeline of “Game of Thrones.” It is based on Martin’s novel “Fire & Blood.”
There are no production dates yet, though according to Bloys, the screenplay is in development. “They are in the room breaking story right now,” he said. “My guess is we’ll see it on the air in ’22.”
HBO greenlit 10 episodes of “House of the Dragon” in October after another “Thrones” prequel, starring Naomi Watts, was canceled.
Bloys said of the cancellation to Variety: “Pilots – sometimes they come together, sometimes they don’t.”
“That [prequel] was 8,000 years before the current show, so it required a lot more invention,” he added.
Martin said in 2018 that the now-canceled prequel would feature 100 kingdoms. He had been developing it with screenwriter Jane Goldman.
