Actress and breast cancer survivor Maritoni Fernandez has been cancer-free for the past 18 years, but that does not mean she no longer has to go to the doctor for regular checkups.
Fernandez recently underwent her first ever magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam to have her breasts checked, as per her Instagram post on June 10. In her photo, she can be seen lying down on the MRI machine and posing as if to say, “Rock on!”
“First time ever inside an MRI machine to get my boobies checked. Gotta be thorough and it’s upcoming my 20 year mark soon…,” Fernandez said. “Praise God! All clear thank you Lord!”
Fernandez, who had her MRI scan at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, shared it was not easy lying flat on her stomach for 20 minutes straight without moving. The loud propeller sounds of the machine also added to the seeming discomfort of it all.
“It’s truly a test of a different kind!” she said. “Thank goodness for ear muffs, a crazy fun imagination like mine and the fact that I’m not claustrophobic.”
She also extended her gratitude to her daughter Lexi, who accompanied her, and all the technicians who explained to her the process of the MRI scan.
“And to my angel today, Doc Mike, for being there to reassure me of my results right away,” added Fernandez. “I am wonderfully blessed. Thank you Jesus! Here’s to the next 20!”
Fernandez celebrated her 17 years of being cancer-free last January 2018, which she marked with a visit to the hospital for her yearly 3D mammography tomosynthesis.
Fernandez shared in a 2011 interview that she has had a lump on her right breast since she gave birth to her child when was 26, but was told by her OB-gyn when she was 27 that she had nothing to worry about. She discovered years later her lump was positive for malignancy and had 40 percent of her right beast removed via lumpectomy. Fernandez turned 50 last March. /ra
