Andrea Brillantes was among the many in Metro Manila stranded in the floods due to heavy rains yesterday, Aug. 11.

She and her mom Belle found themselves stuck for five hours while in a vehicle in Quezon City.

“It was getting dark and got my kid with me. Left me with no choice but to get some help from good friends and kind kababayans (fellow citizens),” recalled Belle in an Instagram post.

When they were rescued with a boat at 5:30 p.m., the flood was already chest-deep.

Mom and daughter were eventually brought to safety after the ordeal.

“Thank you sa mga kuya na tumulong samin ni mama kahit abot na sa dibdib niyo yung tubig (Thank you to the men who helped me and my mother if the water already reached your chests)!” wrote Andrea.

The men in Talayan Village gave “banka (boat) rides to needy people,” according to Belle.

The southwest monsoon or “habagat,” coupled with tropical storm Karding, brought moderate to heavy rains to Luzon and parts of Visayas over the weekend. Yesterday afternoon, light vehicles could no longer pass some Quezon City streets, while some roads in Manila had floods that were knee-deep.

The American Red Cross advises against walking or swimming in floods, given that it could be contaminated. Fast-flowing floodwaters can also cause one to fall over. If in a vehicle, while surrounded by rising floodwater, it is recommended that one get out of the vehicle and move to higher ground. JB
