Patrick Stewart may be on his way back into the “Star Trek” franchise as Captain Jean Luc Picard in a new series.

Thanks to the success of “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Star Trek” veteran and producer Alex Kurtzman got signed in with CBS Television Studios until 2023. Within this period, Kurtzman plans to further expand the “Star Trek” universe with a new series, miniseries and even an animated show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“There is a very short list of writer-producer-directors that every film and television studio wants to be associated with, and Alex and his Secret Hideout team are always at the top,” said CBS president David Stapf in a statement.

However, Stewart’s return as Picard has not been assured yet. CBS declined to comment, but sources indicate a deal has yet to be finalized. Stewart earned fame among “Star Trek” fans for his role as captain Jean Luc Picard in the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” TV series, which aired between September 1987 and May 1994.

Meanwhile, Kurtzman will also head up production for the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery” in place of Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg, who were taken off the project for various issues. One of the reasons refers to the show’s writers complaining about abuse.  Alfred Bayle /ra
