Saab Magalona finds certain lullaby ‘disturbing’ for its violent lyrics
Motherhood fits Saab Magalona well, and she’s loving motherhood right back too. She’s been perceptive and discerning with everything that concerns her newborn son Pancho — even down to the lullabies meant to be sung to put him to sleep.
Such example is “Rock-a-bye Baby”, a familiar lullaby for many the world over, the lyrics of which Magalona found quite questionable. Is it a lullaby? Or a murder ballad?
“Only now realizing how disturbing Rock-A-Bye Baby is,” wrote Magalona on Twitter, May 30. “What is that baby doing on a treetop and why are we singing calmly about a bough breaking, causing the baby to fall — cradle and all?!?”
Only now realizing how disturbing Rock-A-Bye Baby is. What is that baby doing on a treetop and why are we singing calmly abt a bough breaking, causing the baby to fall — cradle and all?!? How abt we call child services on the baby’s parents instead!

Despite its memorable and catchy tune, the age-old Mother Goose lullaby does offer an unsettling graphic image when listened to properly with more critical ears.

“And this is why we shouldn’t judge parents if they choose attachment parenting or sleep training. Whatever works for the family’s sanity.”

But it’s not like things are so different now, as the demands of motherhood are still very much the same. And apart from the usual breastfeed-burp-change diaper routine, Magalona is also required to take extra measures to ensure her son Pancho is healthy, since he was born in critical condition.
Based on Magalona’s frequent updates on her son’s health, however, it seems things are looking up for Pancho after a successful surgery last month, May.
Perhaps more wholesome lullabies are in order? JB
