‘Bagani’ chant ‘Mekeni mekeni’ used in witty statements by netizens
Netizens are finding witty uses for the “Mekeni mekeni” chant in the TV fantasy series “Bagani.”
The chant (“Mekeni mekeni tugtog do re mi”), performed by babaylan (shaman) Gloria (Dimples Romana) to heal a wounded Lakas (Enrique Gil), has been picked up by netizens and used in various ways from describing the sound of heart beat…
…to healing a broken heart.
Netizen @RenOrvesa and his friends found the chant effective in raising confidence before a quiz…
…while netizen Monique Ashley Brillante (@Brillante_mnq19) claimed it helped her pass a test even without studying properly beforehand.
Netizen Ron de los Angeles (@rondelosangeles) thought the chant could be a good greeting.
Some Kapampangans had felt offended, claiming the misuse of the word “mekeni,” which means “come here” in their language. Kapampangan and history student Dondy (@dpgramos) didn’t find any humor in babaylan Gloria’s chant. /ra
