Japan’s Kalafina decides to break up by end of spring

Japanese vocal group Kalafina decides to follow composer Yuki Kajiura out the door and confirms disbandment by the end of spring.
A report from Japanese news outlet Sports Hochi said the members had been unsure about staying together after composer and group creator Kajiura left their agency Space Craft Produce in December.
Their Tuesday bayfm radio program “Kalafina Club” is also set to end at the close of March.
Besides being Kalafina’s creator and composer, Kajiura guides the group’s direction and has been doing so since the group’s debut in 2008.
Kalafina gained fame domestically and internationally for its unique sound and works featured in various anime series. The group specializes in creating an interwoven and harmonious sound that blends the high notes of Wakana Otaki, Keiko Kubota’s bass, and mid-tones of Hikaru Masai. Some of the group’s fan-favorite songs include “Magia” from “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” and Lacrimosa from “Black Butler” (Kuroshitsuji).
The group celebrated its 10th anniversary last Jan. 23 at the Nippon Budokan arena in Tokyo. A 10th-anniversary film is also scheduled to premiere on March 30 during which the three members are expected to make an appearance.
Apart from the anniversary film premiere, no other activities or albums have been planned for the group. However, fans can expect the individual members to collaborate with other artists in the future.
Kalafina’s latest live performance was on March 11 during the Toyosu Music Collaboration event in Tokyo. /ra
