Could actress and comedian Kristen Wiig be Wonder Woman’s next big match?
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. and DC are courting Wiig to play the antagonist in the superhero’s sequel.
While Wiig is best known for her comedic timing in “Saturday Night Live” skits and “Bridesmaids,” her resume has shown her ability to play diverse roles in films such as “The Martian” and “mother!”
In the comics, Cheetah is regarded as the Amazon princess’ archnemesis, and according to That Hashtag Show, a source has said she is the chosen villain for “Wonder Woman 2.”
Emma Stone was reportedly approached for the role, but turned it down.
Cheetah has various iterations in comic books; the one expected on the silver screen is Dr. Barbara Minerva, a British archaeologist who becomes a cheetah god. Her powers include superhuman strength, super-speed, and battling with her claws and fangs. However, this has yet to be confirmed by DC.
An official announcement on the cast also has yet to be confirmed, though it is expected that Gal Gadot will return as the title character. Actors Chris Pine, who plays love interest Steve Trevor, Ewen Bremner and Said Taghmaoiu are also said to reprise their roles.
Patty Jenkins is back to direct the second movie after the commercial and critical success of “Wonder Woman.”
The plot is set in the 1980s and focuses on Diana taking on a collapsed Soviet Union alongside a somehow revived Steve Trevor. The movie is slated for release in 2019 and production is reported to begin this May in the UK. Niña V. Guno /ra
