“I was the best figure skater in the world—at one point,” declares Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding.
The biopic’s trailer features a brash and eager Harding, a figure skater during the ’90s who wanted to make it to the Olympics. Behind her success is an abusive mother LaVona Golden, played by Allison Janney.

“I made you a champion. Knew you’d hate me for it. That’s the sacrifice a mother makes,” says LaVona.
With a story so strange, the retelling can’t help but be comedic. The scenes are as offbeat as Tonya’s life has been, which includes a marriage at 19 to Jeff Gilooly (Sebastian Stan), a longing for acceptance from snobbish judges, and a plot to weed out the competition through an injury.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film made its premiere on Sept. 8 at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and is set to join the Oscars race. It will be released in US theaters on Dec. 8. /ra
