A short sequel to the Studio Ghibli classic anime film “My Neighbor Totoro” was discovered and shared by a Japanese netizen.
Twitter user Toaru (@33kitta) recently uploaded screenshots of the 14-minute long film titled “Mei and the Baby Cat Bus”. It was set after “My Neighbor Totoro” and featured a younger version of the character Cat Bus. The tweet has reached over 270,000 likes and 120,000 retweets as of this writing.
Protagonist Mei and her voice actress Chika Sakamoto also returned for the short film, reports Otaku News via Kotaku.
“Mei and the Baby Cat Bus” had apparently been playing at the Ghibli Museum since 2003 as an exclusive. It was screened only twice in the United States. The short was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki himself.
Studio Ghibli was not known to produce sequels of their films, save for “The Cat Returns”, a spin-off from the film “Whisper of the Heart”.
Toaru posted a poll as a follow up to the earlier share to find out how many knew of “Mei and the Baby Cat Bus”. As of this writing, 91 percent out of more than 370,000 participants said they did not know about this short film.
For those interested in viewing “Mei and the Baby Cat Bus”, it will be screened at the Ghibli Museum for the whole month of November. Alfred Bayle/JB
