Shonda Rhimes, creator of popular television medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” and numerous other hit series, has just signed a four-year deal with Netflix.
After fifteen years in American Broadcasting Company where her career as a television storyteller started and flourished, Rhimes will be moving to a new home, but her legacy will remain.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, all existing series like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” will stay with ABC. Upcoming series such as the spinoff to “Grey’s Anatomy” and the soon-to-debut drama “For the People” will also stay with Rhimes’ first home.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos was reportedly pleased to welcome Rhimes into the fold as he considers her “one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television.” Rhimes is the first African-American woman to achieve the 100-episode milestone thrice in her career.
Moving forward, any new content that her company ShondaLand produces will be exclusive to Netflix. ShondaLand will continue to be headed by Rhimes’ long time producing partner Betsy Beers.
Rhimes is also looking forward to be working with Netflix, as far as her vision for the future is concerned. She said in the report, “Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix. He understood what I was looking for.”
With the entertainment industry rapidly shifting to the streaming platform, storytellers like Rhimes could help speed up the transition by offering high quality content to subscribers. Alfred Bayle/JB
