The official website of the upcoming “Mazinger Z: The Movie” announced today that the film will be released in Japan on January 13, 2018.
A new movie poster was also revealed, which now features the film’s release date along with images of the Mazinger robot and the spaceship Hover Pilder.
A 30-second trailer was released in June which briefly showed the Mazinger robot facing off with a purple enemy. From this short clip, fans are given a glimpse of the animation quality that can be expected from this super robot film.
Toei Animation, the studio producing the movie, describes the film as an original story. However, the lead character will still be the familiar Kouji Kabuto who is the protagonist in the original Mazinger Z manga series by artist Go Nagai, according to Anime! Anime! via Anime News Network.
Mazinger Z is a super robot series that had its roots from a Japanese manga by artist Go Nagai. It serialized from October 1972 to August 1974 and was compiled to five manga volumes. The manga inspired an anime TV series that ran from December 1972 to September 1974 and aired 92 episodes.
Various sequels were later produced which includes “Great Mazinger” (1974), “Mazinkaiser” (2002) and “Mazinger Edition Z: The Impact!” (2009).
“Mazinger Z: The Movie” is a commemorative project to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the “Mazinger Z” manga and TV animation series. JB
