Actress Agot Isidro may be one of the select personalities being wooed by party-list groups to run for the upcoming 2019 Senatorial elections, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she wants to engage in politics.

“For the record, I am not running for any public office,” wrote Isidro in a Twitter post last Saturday, Aug. 18. “Never intended, desired, planned.”

She asserted that being a private citizen gives her an advantage in addressing the problems of society. She also issued a warning to the prospective candidates of the upcoming elections: “I believe I have more power as a private citizen to address society’s ills. Having said that, mag-ingat ang lahat nang tatakbo sa susunod na eleksyon. Wala akong palalampasin.”

(Having said that, those who are running for the next elections should be cautious. I will not condone [any wrongdoing].)

In a separate tweet, Isidro lamented the broken promises made by candidates during the past elections:

Liligawan tayo, papangakuan, puro tumbling ang gagawin para lang makuha ang boto natin. Gagastos nang marami para suhulan tayo. Pag nanalo na, personal na interes na ang paiiralin. In other words, lolokohin lang tayo. We’ve seen this scenario before. Papayag ka ba ulit?

(They will court us, make promises, they will [do everything necessary] to get our votes. They will spend a lot of money to bribe us. Once they win, their personal interests will prevail. In other words, they will only fool us. We’ve seen this scenario before. Will you allow this [to happen] again?)

Isidro encourages netizens to be critical and discerning of the candidates for the upcoming elections.

“I will make it my personal mission to weed out the good from the bad,” noted Isidro. “Let us be critical. Let us be discerning. We deserve good governance. Wag na tayo magpaloko (Let us not let ourselves be fooled [anymore]). ”

Isidro’s statement about her not running came not long after she shared photos of the proposed senatorial slate of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) for the 2019 elections. “Eto na ‘yun? Talaga? (Is this it? Really?)” asked Isidro, punctuating her post with the hashtag #bestandbrightest. It refers to the slogan used by the current administration in the past campaign period, assuring voters that only “the best and the brightest” would be enjoined to be part of the administration’s team.

Isidro, who is an outspoken critic of the current administration, was reportedly being wooed by the “Resistance Coalition” an alliance of Liberal Party (LP), Akbayan and Magdalo party-list groups, and Tindig Pilipinas for the 2019 senatorial elections in May. Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan previously pointed out that Isidro is suitable for the position of arts and culture sector representative in the Senate because of her background. JB
