Anne Curtis recalls suffering from jellyfish sting, supports Sandy’s Act

Anne Curtis, who suffered from a jellyfish sting in 2014 that almost cost her life, declared her support for Sandy’s Act, a bill filed after six-year-old Sandy Garrovillas died of jellyfish sting at a resort.
Senate Bill No. 2971, authored by Sen. Risa Hontiveros, “seeks to prevent, mitigate and respond to risks affecting children and other visitors to Philippine tourists destinations” by providing sufficient medical and emergency services.
Garrovillas died in October 2023 after she did not receive proper medical attention for a jellyfish sting while at a resort.

Curtis shared through her Instagram page on Monday, March 10, a video of Hontiveros tackling Sandy’s Act, with the actress-TV host also recalling how she was stung by a box jellyfish while shooting her then-TV series “Dyesebel.”
“There needs to be more research and awareness on what kind of venomous/deadly jellyfish we have in Philippine waters and [what] kind of anti-venom would be [needed] for the specific species,” Curtis said.
“As someone who went through excruciating pain by a mere brush of the end of three tentacles I can tell you it’s no joke. To see and hear little lives loss to fatal jellyfish stings is [devastating],” she added, referring to Garrovillas’ death.

Aside from Curtis, celebrities Bela Padilla and Janno Gibbs also took to Hontiveros’ comments section to express their support for the bill.
“Beautiful waters mean safe waters,” Padilla wrote.

Garrovillos’ story was narrated by her parents during the Senate hearing conducted by the panel on women, children, family relations and gender equality last Thursday, March 6.
