Derrick Monasterio turned emotional as he recalled how his girlfriend Elle Villanueva “almost died” after falling from a two-story slope during their vacation in Switzerland last February.
Monasterio made the revelation at the media conference of GMA’s murder mystery drama “Slay,” on Wednesday, as he opened up how the incident made him and Villanueva become more appreciative of life.
“She almost died. Nasa [Swiss] Alps kami tapos nadulas siya, dire-diretso lang siya pababa. Sobrang taas, two-storey high slope without seeing the end kasi sobrang foggy,” the actor recalled.
(We were in the [Swiss] Alps and she slipped, she just went straight down. It was so high, two-story high slope without seeing the end because it was so foggy.)
Monasterio said he was asking Villanueva to take a picture of him before she fell.
“Para siyang nag-snowball, lahat ng gamit niya kumalat na doon. Mataas ‘yun. Mga two floors yung pa-slide. Tapos dun sa pinakadulo, may 10-feet drop. So, may hulog pa. Buti na lang may isa pang flat na road na nandoon siya nahulog,” he narrated.
(It was like she became a snowball, all her stuff was spread out there. It was high. The slide was about two floors. Then at the very end, there was a 10-foot drop. So, there was another fall. Luckily there was a flat road where she fell.)

The 29-year-old actor remarked that he’s grateful Villanueva didn’t sustain any serious injuries.
“Buti na lang walang nangyari, na hindi siya na-injure. Buti na lang safe kami, pero ‘yun ‘yung nagpa-realize sakin na life is short. Huwag mong i-take for granted ‘yung buhay,” he said.
(Luckily nothing happened, she wasn’t injured. Luckily we were safe, but that made me realize that life is short. Don’t take life for granted.)
Monasterio also shared that they got the incident “on-tape” and Villanueva plans to release it through her vlog soon.
In February, the actor posted pictures of their Switzerland trip where he first gave a hint about the incident, writing, “Something really really CRAZY happened here, almost life changing, that we both got to appreciate every second of our lives even more […] Scariest moment of my life.”
After having “no label relationship,” Monasterio confirmed in Aug. 2023 that he and Villanueva are officially in a relationship.
The pair previously starred together in the afternoon shows “Makiling” and “Return to Paradise.”
Meanwhile, Monasterio currently stars in the murder mystery “Slay,” alongside Julie Anne San Jose, Gabbi Garcia, Mikee Quintos, and Ysabel Ortega, among others.
