Southern girl Skylar Laine was impressive during her audition in Houston, Texas—prompting the judges to call her “the young Reba McEntire” due to her distinct, twangy style.

Viewers were given a glimpse of Skylar’s other hobbies: hunting with her own rifle and “mud riding.” The family-owned grocery store was shown decked with hunting trophies, as was the Laine house.

In a sea of country singers, Skylar stood out due to her remarkable stage presence—especially during her group’s rendition of the Dusty Springfield hit, “Son of a Preacher Man.”

Stage chemistry

For her performance in the Top 25 elimination, Skylar sang “Stay With Me,” which placed her among the top of the pack. She exhibited such energy, jumping around and working the crowd, that her fellow contestants branded her a “firecracker” on stage.

Skylar had strong stage chemistry with fellow contestant Colton Dixon. They were often teased on the show, but both denied romantic inclinations if only because, as Colton put it, “Skylar owns a gun.”

Despite being the only female country singer left in the finals, Skylar failed to advance to the very top. But her most commended performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings”—a noncountry song—showcased her strong vocal range.

She also ventured into different styles, including Lady Gaga, though this was met with criticism.

Skylar, who was best friends with Hollie Cavanagh, said she wished she’d be eliminated before Hollie because she couldn’t imagine going through the show without her.

During the British pop/1960s week, Skylar got her wish and was booted from the show, finishing at fifth place.

Skylar said in an interview that, although her pop song numbers were well-received, she is sticking to her country roots for the “Idols” tour.
