Miss Earth delegates show how ‘revenge travel’ is done pageant-style

MANILA, Philippines — The easing of COVID-19 restrictions and the opening up of international borders gave rise to the global “revenge travel” phenomenon, and the 2022 Miss Earth delegates showed how it’s done pageant-style in the Philippines.

More than 80 international delegates have flown to Manila to mark the resumption of the physical staging of the Miss Earth pageant after the organizers conducted virtual editions in 2020 and 2021 because of the global health crisis.

They have just toured Zamboanga City where they also had a swimsuit competition, and organizer Carousel Productions said they will be later whisked away in groups to several other destinations in the Visayas and in Luzon.

In groups, the Miss Earth delegates will also visit Dumaguete City, Siaton in Negros Oriental, Tuburan in Cebu, and the province of Romblon in the Visayas.

Different groups of delegates are also scheduled to visit Pontefino in Batangas City, Aqua Planet in Pampanga, Ligao City in Albay, Brooke’s Point in Palawan, and the province of Tarlac in Luzon.

With a scheduled visit to 10 destinations in the Philippines, this is one of the most well-traveled batches of Miss Earth delegates in recent history. Carousel Productions also revealed that there are still several other local government units who have expressed their intentions to also host the pageant’s candidates, in a bid to boost tourism and promote their places to the international market through the global beauty contest.

The Miss Earth pageant, and the counterpart national competition Miss Philippines Earth, were established by Filipino organizers Carousel Productions in 2001 to serve as a platform to promote environmental awareness through ecotourism even before “sustainability” became a byword.

The winners, dubbed “Beauties for a Cause,” serve as ambassadors of environmental protection and are expected to lead projects that help conserve the planet for future generations.

To date, four Filipino women have received the title—Karla Henry in 2008, Jamie Herrell in 2014, Angelia Ong in 2015, and Karen Ibasco in 2017.
