‘Big Night!’ chosen as PH entry to New York Asian Film Festival
Acclaimed writer-director Jun Lana’s drug war film “Big Night!” is set to make its New York premiere after being chosen as an entry in the New York Asian Film Festival.
The IdeaFirst Company, which produced the film, announced the movie’s participation in the festival via its Instagram page today, June 18.
“#BigNight in New York! MMFF 2021 big winner BIG NIGHT will be making its way to the Big Apple! Watch BIG NIGHT in its New York premiere this July 15-31 in this year’s New York Asian Film Festival!” it stated.
“Big Night!” will premiere alongside over 60 other productions from Japan, Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Taiwan, among others. It is the only Filipino production in the lineup for this year, as per a release by the Film at Lincoln Center on Thursday, June 16.

For its 20th anniversary, the New York Asian Film Festival aims to increase Asian representation onscreen. Aside from “Big Night!”, the films to be screened at the festival include Stephen Chow’s “Kung Fu Hustle” and the Pang Brothers’ horror film “The Eye.”

“Big Night!” stars actor Christian Bables as Dharna, a gay beautician who finds himself doing makeup on corpses of victims of extrajudicial killings. It won various awards including best picture at the Metro Manila Film Festival last year. Bables was named best actor for his performance in the film. /ra
