‘American Idol’ alum David Archuleta comes out as part of LGBTQ+ community
David Archuleta has revealed that he is a member of the LGBTQ+ community and opened up about his struggles with his sexuality and religion.
The “American Idol” star stated that he wanted to raise awareness for those who “feel the same way,” as he showed a photo of himself on his Instagram page today, June 13.
“I’ve been open to myself and my close family for some years now that I am not sure about my own sexuality,” Archuleta stated. He recalled that he came out as gay to his family in 2014, and later identified as bisexual after realizing he is attracted to both males and females.
“There are people experiencing the same feelings of being LGBTQIA+ […] who are wrestling to follow their beliefs that are so important to them, just as I have. [I don’t know] what to make of it and I don’t have all the answers,” he added.
He urged the public to be more understanding of those in the LGBTQ+ community, especially those who are “trying to find that balance with their faith.”

Archuleta also asked people to show compassion for others, pointing out that talking about sexuality can be an “exhausting” journey for some people.
“I’ve tried for almost 20 years to try and change myself until I realized God made me how I am for a purpose. And instead of hating what I have considered wrong, I need to see why God loved me for who I am and that it’s not just sexuality,” he said.
Archuleta added that religious individuals can be more helpful by listening to the “wrestle between being LGBTQIA+ and a person of faith.” He stated that he was not comfortable talking about his sexuality to the public, but felt that he should address those who are in the “same situation” as him.
“You’re not alone,” he stressed. “You can be part of the LGBTQIA+ community and still believe in God and His gospel plan.” JB
