Indie Showcase: Mix Fenix
It is high time the spotlight be focused also on our indie bands and solo artists. They do form a deep well of diverse and amazing talents in the local scene. I will be showcasing once in a while an indie band or solo artist that to my mind deserves a look and more attention. So below, let’s get to know Mix Fenix.
1. What/who inspired you to get into music?
Mix Fenix: As cheesy as it may sound, it was my family. I admire many local and international artists of many genres, but i’d have to say that my family was my biggest inspiration despite being the only one who pursued a singer-songwriter career.
Growing up, they encouraged me to sing for them during parties and other gatherings and this boosted my confidence and drive to perform. It really takes “surround yourself with people who empower you to become better” (n.d.) to a whole different level. Nurture your children to become who they want to become and what you get in return will be worth much more than you invested.
2. What are your musical influences?

It’s always good to step into others’ minds through their favorite music! Personally, some of my musical influences are Incubus, One Republic, Jakubi, Foster The People, Bill Withers, Rico Blanco, Bamboo, and everyone’s favorite local band-Up Dharma Down.

Mix Fenix: In three words, I’m aspiring for my music to be fresh, cool, and empowering. I want people to really feel and experience my music at a personal level.
4. What do you think of the current local scene?
Mix Fenix: All artists are struggling in this pandemic, that’s a given, but we have all to this new norm by maximizing our online presence. People are holding regular Live Busking sessions and actually earning tips, vlogging and even putting up their own online fundraising events where other musicians are invited to play with a talent fee.
I’m actually very impressed with how well our local musicians all over the Philippines are holding up. Of course, it’s even more of a struggle to earn, but we have also learnt to support one another by sharing each other’s links and cheering each other on. Supporting our artists is the best thing we can do for them in this pandemic.
5. Who is Mix Fenix in a nutshell?
Mix Fenix: An extroverted Gemini who will share a cheap bottle of wine with you, as we sing our woes away ’til the sun wakes up.
