1st Teatro Europa aims to introduce European plays to Filipinos

MANILA, Philippines — With the Philippines still grappling with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the European Union (EU) Delegation to the Philippines will be holding its first-ever Teatro Europa online which aims to introduce European plays to Filipinos.

For the upcoming festival, the EU has partnered with six universities to stage theater performances of plays from Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Spain

The universities that will stage European classic plays are:

FEATURED STORIES

Rizal Technological University — “The Green Room” by Arnošt Goldflam (Czech Republic)
Mapua University — “Robbers” Friedrich by Schiller (Germany)
The University of Makati — “School for Wives” by Molière (France)
University of the East — “Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni (Italy)
“The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest” by Tirso de Molina (Spain)
Arellano University — “Everyman” by Hugo von Hofmannsthal (Austria)

The performances will be streamed over Teatro Europa’s Facebook page every Friday to Sunday for the month of September.

And once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, the EU said that these plays will hopefully be made available live in universities in the country.

“Let me say, I think it is a beautiful initiative especially in these times of the pandemic,” EU Delegation to the Philippines Chargé d’affaires Thomas Wiersing said in an online press conference.

“I’m proud of this initiative not only because it is a first, but also we are joined by several universities and their theater groups,” he added.
