The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit gala — popularly known as the Met Gala 2024 — witnessed the gathering of the industry’s brightest stars at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on May 6 (morning of May 7, Philippine time) as they showcased their interpretation of the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

With this theme in mind, celebrities, influencers, and fashion personalities donned dramatic ballgowns with intricate patterns, archival pieces, and glamorous accessories to complement the dress code in homage to the dress code “The Garden of Time” based on the 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard.

In her first look, the actress-singer was reminiscent of ocean waves in a blue-green mermaid gown adorned with organza tulle by Maison Margiela. Then, in a surprise second look, Zendaya went for an edgier route with a vintage Givenchy off-shoulder gown with a massive bouquet headpiece.

2. Mona Patel

Indian fashion entrepreneur Mona Patel emerged as the diamond of the fashion event in a nude Iris Van Herpen, with the mechanical butterfly wings on the sleeves being the highlight of her show-stopping piece.

3. Tyla

Straying from the flowy elegance of her smash hit “Water,” Tyla paid homage to “the sands of time” in a Balmain gown made of real sand. The gown was brought to life with the sand cast on her curves and is brought together with an hourglass clutch.

4. Elle Fanning

Ten years after starring as a princess in the 2014 film “Maleficent,” Elle Fanning returned to her Sleeping Beauty roots in a crystalline Balmain gown with transparent fronds resembling an ice sculpture and liquefied diamonds.

The look was brought together with an ice-like bird sculpture perched on her left shoulder and silver drop earrings.

5. Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner is one of the few celebrities who stayed faithful to the plot of the event’s dress code, as the short story centered around the fall of aristocracy and how money couldn’t stop the inevitable death.

Opting for a rebellious take on aristocracy, Jenner was a standout in a black two-piece gown with shoulder tendrils from the Givenchy Fall 1999 couture, with her waves done in twists.

6. Penelope Cruz

Another celebrity who did an ode to aristocracy with a tiny nod to the French was Penelope Cruz in her off-shoulder, jet black ball gown in Chanel. The dramatic look was also put together with a blue headpiece and diamond necklace.

7. Cynthia Erivo

In the (sarcastic) words of Miranda Priestly, flowers for spring are not groundbreaking at all. But “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo proved that you can breathe new life into a garden-inspired look by donning an all-black Thom Browne tuxedo gown adorned with pink flower petals, almost like a garden.

8. Phoebe Dynevor

Fashion enthusiasts can expect a “diamond” like “Bridgerton” star Phoebe Dynevor in an archival pink gown by Victoria Beckham, featuring stitched-on handmade lace and delicate tulle fabric. The rose-inspired look was put together by a low ponytail and silver drop earrings.

9. Emma Chamberlain

Emma Chamberlain showed off her curves in an enchanting custom Jean Paul Gaultier gown, with its corseted bodice and ivy-like trim taking on the form of a “decaying” plant. The dramatic gown — albeit its tragic homage to nature — was brought together by a chic updo, brown makeup, and silver jewelry.

10. Jennie

Opting for a sexier route compared to her previous Met Gala ensemble, Jennie was a sultry goddess in her striking blue, two-piece gown by Alaia with an asymmetrical skirt and a high-neckline, and accessorized by a gold belly chain.
