Myrtle says switching networks nothing to do with ABS-CBN’s franchise woes
While the timing does seem a bit curious, Myrtle Sarrosa said her transfer to GMA 7 has nothing to do with the franchise woes of her former home network, ABS-CBN.
“It’s not a factor in my decision. It’s just a coincidence. I have been auditioning for GMA 7 since October last year. It’s just that the transition took a while because I wanted to talk to people at ABS-CBN, ask for their opinions and permission,” she said at a press conference, shortly after her recent contract signing attended by Kapuso executives.
After winning the reality show “Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition 4” in 2012, Myrtle worked under Star Magic and stayed there for eight years. “I love and care about the people I have been with there, so I really wanted to talk to them personally, have their blessing,” she said, adding that she will be forever grateful to ABS-CBN.
“I started there and I owe them a lot of what I have now—from being a simple girl in Bacolod to doing television shows and different projects,” she said. “I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, hurt people’s feelings or burn bridges.”
The 25-year-old actress, who made a name for herself as a cosplayer and gamer before entering the biz, admitted that she had been entertaining thoughts of moving to another network as early as 2018. “But I felt I wasn’t ready then,” she said.
“[Last year], I went for auditions for GMA Artist Center—acting, singing, hosting. And then finally, I received a call back, saying I have been accepted. I’m happy and grateful that they trust in my talent,” she related.
There are rumors claiming that Myrtle will be part of GMA 7’s upcoming live adaptation of the iconic animated series “Voltes V.” But while she did try out for a role, a decision has yet to be made, Myrtle stressed.
“Since I’m a super fan of ‘Voltes V,’ it would be a dream project,” she said.
Given her knowledge and love for Japanese anime, Myrtle seems like the sensible choice for the show. But she’s not thinking too far ahead.
While GMA 7 is hoping to maximize her background in cosplay and gaming, it also hopes to further expand her range as a performer. “They also want to expose me to more dramas or comedies” related Myrtle, who’s also a singer-songwriter, who has penned songs for the likes of Jennylyn Mercado and Maja Salvador.
Some of Myrtle’s first projects so far include a guest appearance at the long-running gag show “Bubble Gang” and an episode of the drama anthology “Tadhana,” which had her working with Jak Roberto.
“As soon as I moved here, I was presented with projects right away and opportunities I have yet to experience,” she said. “I was shy during my first taping day for ‘Bubble Gang.’ But everyone was warm, welcoming. After a while, we were already goofing around and dancing on the set.”
Asked who among GMA 7’s stars she would love to work with, Myrtle said Alden Richards and Julie Anne San Jose. “Alden is a gamer like me. And I have also been wondering what’s it’s like working with him. I have also done trainings with Julie in the past. It would be nice if we can perform together onstage,” she said.
