A night of music with Jason Derulo

THE LAST time Jason Derulo performed in the country in 2010, he was still new to the mainstream scene; he was only 20, and had just released his self-titled debut record. And although he already had three hits under his belt, “Whatcha Say,” “In My Head” and “Ridin’ Solo,” the series of gigs he did here were relatively modest and took place in malls.
But six years and three more albums after, the American R&B and hip-hop artist is now set to headline his first full concert in Manila—mounted by Wilbros Live—on May 27 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena (call 4702222).
In an interview with the Inquirer and select Filipino journalists before taking the stage at the 2015 MTV World Stage Malaysia in Petaling Jaya, Derulo said he would love to return to the Philippines and hold a bigger show for his fans.
“The world is such a big place, and I wish I could go everywhere. I’m hoping to tour and make a stop there… that would be fly!” related the singer-songwriter, who has sold around 50 million singles since making his debut as a solo performer in 2009.
Filipino concertgoers can expect a stronger set from Derulo this time, with the inclusion of his more recent hit songs like “Want to Want Me,” “Talk Dirty” and “Wiggle” into his music artillery.
And if what we saw from the 26-year-old star at the MTV World Stage were an indication of the kind of show he has in store in May, the fans will be treated not only to a night of music, but also to a showcase of athleticism.
Derulo, who studied musical theater before his foray into show biz, was an explosive, indefatigable presence onstage.
Joining Derulo in Manila as a special guest is American rapper-record producer Redfoo, who’s more popularly known as a member of LMFAO—the electronic dance act behind such dance bangers as “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It.”
