For ‘The Clash’ judges, grit will define singing champ’s future

While having a wide vocal range is an asset in a contest setting, it’s not the be-all and end-all of singing.

There are many other things to consider and not all of them are necessarily related to vocal ability, judges of the reality talent search “The Clash” said.

“Of course, it’s an advantage if you can hit high notes and go low. Some people have naturally high voices while others don’t… But there’s also vocal quality, the ability to express emotions, versatility and song choice,” Lani Misalucha said at a press conference for the ongoing sixth season of the singing competition.

Joining Lani on the judging panel are Christian Bautista and Ai-Ai delas Alas. Hosted by Julie Anne San Jose and Rayver Cruz, “The Clash” airs Saturday evenings on GMA 7.

Technical proficiency, however, can only get an aspirant so far. When the show is over, it’s grit and perseverance that could end up defining one’s future.

“After ‘The Clash,’ that’s when real life begins. Now we’re in a controlled environment but once you graduate, anything is possible. You need to be tough in this industry. There will be hard times, so you have to do your best to get back and prevail,” Christian said.

‘No formula for stardom’

“We want a winner who can adjust quickly and prove that he or she can be a champion, not just for a year, but for years to come,” he added.

There’s also something to be said about star quality or aesthetic.

“We all have different looks… We’re all beautiful and handsome in our own right. But there has to be something that makes you unique. How can you set yourself apart? It can be through styling or hairstyle, your attitude and the way you carry yourself, or the way you talk and act,” he said.

At the end of the day, there’s no template or definitive formula for stardom. The odds and intangibles may not always be in one’s favor, but it still pays to have a strong foundation.

“Success can start with a good song. Sometimes, it’s destiny. There are artists who do everything they can but are still unable to hit their target. And then, there are those who seem to make it from the start. If it’s meant for you, it will be given to you,” Christian said.
