Reese Witherspoon, through her production company Hello Sunshine, is confirmed to be working on a spinoff series of her hit 2001 film “Legally Blonde.”

Witherspoon is producing the series with “Gossip Girl” creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage—who have been reportedly writing the show’s pilot episode—as per E! News on Friday, April 5.

While further details on the project are being kept under wraps, other production companies that are said to be involved in the spinoff series as well are Fake Empire and Amazon MGM Studios.

The first “Legally Blonde” movie—which introduced Witherspoon as a sorority sister turned Harvard Law prodigy—was released in 2001, while its sequel “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde” came out in 2003.

The first film grossed $141.8 million across global theaters, while the sequel brought in $124.9 million.

A third installation of the film franchise was announced back in 2018, and has since been in the works.

Asked about the project’s slow progress, Mindy Kaling, who’s writing its script, said in 2022 that they were taking their time as they were not keen on being responsible for “ruining what’s basically Reese’s ‘Avengers’ franchise.”

The “Legally Blonde 3” production will be helmed by the first movie’s original producer, Marc Platt.
