‘Mathematics Tour’ concert marks Ed Sheeran’s ‘perfect’ comeback in Manila

The British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran finally returned to the Philippines after six long years for his highly anticipated ‘Mathematics Tour,’ which took place on March 9, 2024, at the SMDC Festival Grounds in Parañaque City. Delivering a captivating performance showcasing his hit songs, Sheeran indeed made the 100th show of his tour unforgettable.

The concert started with sensational performances from opening acts, Calum Scott and OPM band Ben&Ben. Scott serenaded the audience with his popular tracks “You Are The Reason” and “Dancing On My Own,” while Ben&Ben captivated the crowd with their soulful songs, including “Pagtingin” and “Kathang Isip.” Later that night, Sheeran also invited Ben&Ben’s vocalists Paolo and Miguel Benjamin on stage to perform their hit song “Maybe the Night,” creating a surreal moment not only for fans but also for the Filipino musicians themselves.

Sheeran, visibly thrilled to be back in Manila, expressed his appreciation for the city’s passionate fans, stating, “I was here about 6 years ago; Manila has been the loudest crowd.”

Wearing a customized “Mathematics” tour shirt with “Manila” text on the front, the hitmaker ignited the crowd’s energy from the get-go with his opening song “Tides.” From there, he seamlessly transitioned into crowd favorites like “Don’t,” “No Diggity,” and “Give Me Love,” captivating audiences from all corners of the SMDC Festival Grounds.

Throughout the night, Sheeran showcased his versatility as an artist, from the upbeat rhythms of “Galway Girl,” accompanied by violinist Alicia Enstrom, to the soulful melody of “Thinking Out Loud.”

Encouraging audience participation, Sheeran quipped, “These are songs even your grandmother knows. If you don’t know the lyrics, you’re probably in the wrong concert,” then went on to sing the OG Sheerios’ favorite tracks such as “Photograph,” “Tenerife Sea,” “Sing,” and “Happier.” He also treated fans to a beautiful rendition of “Love Yourself.”

Sheeran stayed true to his promise of delivering an unforgettable experience as he also treated fans to a medley of his collaborated singles, including “Peru,” “Beautiful People,” and “I Don’t Care.”

As the night drew to a close, Sheeran reassured his Filipino fans that he wouldn’t wait another six years to return, promising, “I promise I will be back but not 6 or 7 years long.”

To close the concert, Sheeran left the audience in awe with performances of “Shape of You” and “Bad Habits,” accompanied by a dazzling display of fireworks that illuminated the Manila sky.
