Megan Young says sorry amid criticism for fixing Miss Botswana’s hair

Megan Young has apologized for “failing to oversee the bigger picture” after she was slammed by netizens for fixing the hair of Miss World Botswana Lesego Chombo during the global tilt’s question-and-answer (Q&A) portion.

Young drew the ire of African pageant fans after fixing a tendril of Chombo’s hair from her face before she was asked to give her pitch to the “sharks of Shark Tank India” during the coronation night of the 71st Miss World on March 9.

Krystyna Pyszková from Czech Republic crowned Miss World in India

The Miss World pageant has finally crowned its 71st queen, and she is Krystyna Pyszková from Czech Republic who emerged victorious in the competition held two years since the previous edition of the international tilt.

Pyszková bested 111 other aspirants from different countries and territories at the final show held at the Jio World Convention Center in Mumbai, India, on March 9, staged after several postponements and changes in venue.

Philippines’ Gwendolyne Fourniol concluded her Miss World journey after she fell short of entering the pageant’s Top 40 finalists during the coronation night held in India on Saturday, March 9. 

Candidates who advanced to the next round were Brazil, Uganda, Ukraine, Nepal, Martinique, Croatia, Vietnam, Botswana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, England, Lebanon, Tunisia, Belize, Canada, Dominican Republic, Peru, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Gibraltar, Italy, Spain, Wales, Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Turkey.

There is no denying that the Philippines is a “Miss Universe country.” But far more peoples from many countries around the globe are more familiar with the international pageant’s “older sister,” the Miss World competition.

The London-based international tilt is the longest-running global contest, established by the late Eric Morley in the United Kingdom in 1951, a year before the birth of the Miss Universe pageant. His wife Julia has taken over the reins after his passing.

After much delay and with the announcement of a different venue made earlier, the Miss World Organization (MWO) said its 71st competition is finally happening in India, the next host country. The Philippines’ representative to the global tilt, Gwendolyne Fourniol, is excited with the recent declaration, and not only because her long wait will finally be over.

“The new venue took me by surprise but it was also one of the tentative countries mentioned before. It actually added to my excitement because I really admire Indian culture and tradition,” the French-Filipino model from Negros Occidental told the Inquirer in an online interview.

Gwendolyne Fourniol from Negros Occidental was proclaimed Miss World Philippines, inheriting the crown from Tracy Maureen Perez to become the country’s representative to the 71st edition of the Miss World pageant, whose date and location is yet to be announced.

Fourniol bested 35 other aspirants for the title in ceremonies staged at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on June 6. She now carries the task of bringing home the Philippines’ second Miss World victory, nine years after Megan Young became the first Filipino woman to capture the “blue crown” from the longest-running international beauty pageant in the world.

The Miss World pageant is currently at the homestretch of its 71st edition in India, a culmination of the long journey the competition has taken to get to where it is right now.

It was supposed to be held late 2022, and reports stated that London would have been the host destination for it. But the previous edition, its 70th, only concluded in March of the same year, after a brief interlude caused by a COVID-19 outbreak.

Megan Young, who is now in India for her hosting stint at the 71st Miss World pageant, was delighted to be able to bond with her fellow queens prior to the coronation night.

Through an Instagram post on Thursday, March 7, reigning queen Karolina Bielawska gave a glimpse of the pageant titleholders’ reunion that included Young (2013), Mireia Lalaguna (2015), Stephanie Del Valle Diaz (2016), Vanessa Ponce de Leon (2018) and Toni-Ann Singh (2019).

Miss World 2024 will have Megan Young do hosting duties anew for the international pageant’s coronation night to be held on March 9 in Mumbai, India.

Young, the lone Miss World winner from the Philippines to date, had previously hosted the global tilt’s 2014 edition, a year after her coronation in Indonesia. She was also one of the presenters in the 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 editions, giving her a six-year tenure as host.

Gwendolyne Fourniol was ecstatic as she claimed a spot both in the Top 25 finalists of the 71st Miss World Head2Head challenge, and in the Top 32 finalists of the sports challenge.

“Philippines! We made it to [the] Top 25 of head to head challenge, and qualified for the sports challenge final! (Top 8 per continent),” she announced via her Instagram Stories on Friday, Feb. 23.

Gwendolyne Fourniol set foot in India with a clear goal of bringing home the Philippines’ second Miss World crown, as can be seen in her glamorous ensembles before the pageant’s preliminary competition and coronation night.

Almost two years had passed since Fourniol’s coronation as the country’s representative to the 71st Miss World competition after the pageant’s repeated changes in schedule. She ultimately flew to New Delhi in India weeks ahead of the coronation on March 9 (March 10 in the Philippines).
