MANILA, Philippines — Binibining Pilipinas Nicole Borromeo got Filipinos voting as she emerges as one of the top three delegates from Asia-Pacific in the initial count of the online poll conducted by the 2023 Miss International pageant taking place in Japan.

The Cebuana host, model, and interior design student joined Vietnam’s Nguyen Phuong Nhi and Bangladesh’s Farzana Yasmin Ananna as the top delegates from the region based on the most recent tabulation. The Miss International pageant announced the partial results on social media.

As in last year’s pageant, the 2023 competition opened the voting to the public through the official Miss International mobile app, powered by Choicely, and available for free on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The top delegates from the three geographic regions will earn automatic spots in the Top 15.

For the Americas, Itzia Garcia from Mexico leads the partial count, followed by Andrea Rubio from Venezuela and Yamilex Hernandez from the Dominican Republic. “This region has a very close battle where the leader usually changes day after day,” the Miss International pageant said.

Europe and Africa are lumped in one geographic region for the poll. Leading the group is Lilene Vieira Sarrao from Portugal, with Lysia Allaire from France and Zoi Asoumanaki Greece in second and third places, respectively.

Last year, two of the top five finishers were the top vote-getters in their respective regions—first runner-up Stephany Amado from Cape Verde who dominated the Europe and Africa group, and second runner-up Tatiana Calmell from Peru who topped the voting in the Americas.

Savanna Delos Santos from Northern Mariana Islands was the top delegate from the Asia-Pacific region. She finished in the Top 15. The Philippines’ Hannah Arnold was the lone Asian delegate to advance to the semifinals in the 2022 Miss International pageant.

The public may continue keying in their votes on the Miss International mobile app. The first vote per user is free. The results of the online poll will be announced during the coronation show at the Yoyogi Gymnasium No. 2 in Tokyo’s Shibuya ward on Oct. 26.

Borromeo will try to become the seventh Filipino woman to win the Miss International title, after Gemma Cruz in 1964, Aurora Pijuan in 1970, Melanie Marquez in 1979, Precious Lara Quigaman in 2005, Bea Rose Santiago in 2013, and Kylie Verzosa in 2016.

Before flying to Tokyo, the reigning national queen paid a courtesy call on Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko. She also flew to the Land of the Rising Sun ahead of the other delegates because of several engagements. She had a courtesy visit with Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene Garcia Albano, and attended a “meet-and-greet” event hosted by the Filipino community at the Shin-Yokohama Grace Hotel on Oct. 8.
