Karen Davila could not seem to contain her joy as she announced that David, her son diagnosed with autism, is now a college freshman at the University of the Philippines.
The veteran broadcaster gave a glimpse of what appears to be David’s first day in the university, through her Instagram page on Wednesday, Sept. 13.
“PROUD OF YOU DAVID. Wow! This day!” Karen said in the caption. “David, now a freshman at the UP College of Fine Arts for the Associate in Arts undergraduate program!”
“Last May 2023, David took the talent determination test along with hundreds of students at the UP Diliman campus. No parents allowed during testing,” she continued. “By June, we got the letter that David made it! My heart was bursting with joy!”
Karen then expressed her gratitude to the officials of UP Diliman, her alma mater, as well as the College of Fine Arts “for choosing inclusivity.” She also spoke about her appreciation for David’s teachers from Vanguard Academy who have been helping him to adjust to college.
“Preparing a child in the autism spectrum for college takes a lot of support and planning,” Davila said. “It is true, ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ Even more so, a child with special needs.”
“Thank you teachers, David is in college because of all of you. I hope this serves as an inspiration to my co-parents out there!” she added.
Davila concluded her post by addressing her son: “David, you continue to defy limitations and expectations. You are God’s miracle.”
Fans and fellow celebrities were elated as they celebrated David’s milestone via the comments section.
David was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDD/NOS) in the Autism Spectrum, when he was three years old. He had also suffered and overcome two full-blown seizures in 2020 and 2021. /ra
