P-pop supergroup SB19 has cemented their spot in the global music scene as they were included in the “Best Modern Boy Bands” list of Canada-based pop culture platform Watchmojo.

The five piece act — consisting of Pablo, Josh, Stell, Ken, and Justin — was named one of the 20 “modern boy groups” who gained widespread recognition in the 2000s, according to a list that also ranked the K-pop supergroup BTS as Number 1. Watchmojo uploaded the list on its official website and YouTube channel on Wednesday, March 29.

SB19, which ranked 20th on the list, was praised for the group’s “ambitious choices,” which propelled them as “trailblazers for a new generation of Filipino music,” making them the only Filipino act to be included.

“The incredibly talented ensemble blends a wide variety of musical stylings and sensibilities to form a wholly unique sound,” Watchmojo said. “After going viral in 2019, their fame led to the band making music history by earning top Billboard Music Award nominations.”

The Filipino boy group was earlier nominated  for U.S.-based Billboard’s Top Social Artist alongside Blackpink, BTS, Ariana Grande, and Seventeen in 2021. In January 2022, they maintained their reign in its Hot Trending Songs chart for six weeks with their song “Bazinga.”

The report also took note of SB19 being named as the youth ambassadors of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) back in December 2021, in hopes of “representing the Philippines’ ‘culture and stories’ around the world.”

Aside from SB19 and BTS, also in the list are Korean groups BigBang, EXO, SHINee, Seventeen, and SuperM. One Direction and Jonas Brothers were also praised for their impact in the music scene.

The P-pop act debuted in October 2018 with the ballad “Tilaluha,” and their dance practice video of their single “Go Up” went viral a year later. They are best known for their hit songs “What?,” “Bazinga,” “Mapa,” “Nyebe,” and “Where You At (WYAT),” among many others.

SB19, who’s set to release their upcoming album “Pagtatag,” also made headlines in February 2023 when they were featured in the fourth episode of the South Korean docuseries “K-pop Generation,” where the members spoke about their rise into superstardom and music goals in the years to come. EDV
