David Licauco confirms he is newly single: ‘Kakabreak ko lang actually’
David Licauco revealed that he is not in a relationship with anyone at the moment, as he has just recently been through a break-up.
The “Maria Clara at Ibarra” breakout star opened up about his relationship status as well as the characteristics of his ideal girl on the “Updated with Nelson Canlas” podcast with GMA entertainment reporter Nelson Canlas, which was released on Thursday, Feb. 9.
When asked by Canlas whether he is seeing anyone, Licauco claimed that he just recently broke up with an unnamed girlfriend although he did not disclose any more details about his personal life.
“Wala, wala. Kaka-break ko lang actually,” he said. “Siguro siyempre, hindi lang nagkakasundo minsan ‘yung relationship.”
(I don’t have a girlfriend. I’ve actually just been through a break-up. Perhaps, it’s because of misunderstanding in the relationship.)

When he was persuaded by the reporter to reveal who makes him kilig or gives him butterflies in his stomach, he said in jest that his dog makes me happy.
Licauco was then put in the hot seat by Canlas when he was requested to share if he ever made someone cry in the past.
“Oo naman, siyempre. Minsan, may mga nagagawa or shortcomings [tapos] iiyak. Kunwari, napasaya mo [siya] nang sobra tapos iiyak din. Ganun talaga eh,” he said.
(Of course I did. Sometimes, you can’t help but mess up and have shortcomings which can make someone cry. For example, if you make someone very happy, she will eventually cry as well. It happens.)
David’s ideal girl
During the podcast, Licauco was persuaded by Canlas to reveal the characteristics of his ideal girl.
“I really like girls who are smart, ‘yun ang pinakanumber-one non-negotiable ko (that is my number one non-negotiable trait). Smart, simple, comes from a good family, knows what she wants, and knows her limits, and knows what she does not want. And may kompiyansa sa sarili (and someone who has self-confidence),” he said.
The Filipino-Chinese actor was also asked if his ideal girl should be a chinita or must have Chinese genes.
“Well, hindi naman. Honestly. ‘Yung dad ko rin naman, hindi full Chinese talaga. Hindi naman ‘to factor (Well, not really. Honestly. My dad is not a full Chinese so it’s not really a factor),” he replied.
Licauco also opened up about dating older women, including his thoughts about getting into a May-December love affair.
“Siguro one to two years [older than me], nagkaroon na ako ng girlfriend na one to two years,” he said. “With all honesty, as of right now, I am really focused on my career. I have so many things to do na parang I know for a fact that girls wanna get married or hope to get married sooner than guys. As of right now, nasa stage ako na… siguro if I’m still 18, okay sa akin ang mga mas matanda sakin pero right now, I’d rather date someone na mas bata sa akin para I still have this time window para makapag-focus ako,” he said.
(I guess I’m okay with dating women who are one to two years older than me, since I used to have a girlfriend in the same age range… Maybe if I’m still 18, it would be okay to have an older girlfriend, but as of now, I would rather date someone younger so that I would have that time window to be able to focus on my career.)
Canlas then wanted to know about the actor’s ideal number of children when the right time comes, to which he said “three or four” because he hopes to have “one big happy family” someday.
Licauco plays Fidel in the GMA fantasy-history teleserye “Maria Clara at Ibarra” where he shares the spotlight with onscreen partner Barbie Forteza, Dennis Trillo, Julie Anne San Jose, Khalil Ramos, and Juancho Triviño. He is set to reprise his role with Forteza in the extension of the popular TV show, as well as in its arc towards the story of Simoun (Trillo) from Jose Rizal’s follow-up novel, “El Filibusterismo.”
The actor is also cast in the romance film “Without You” with Shaira Diaz, which is directed by RC Delos Reyes. EDV
